Sizdeh Bedar - The Iranian 7000 year old Picnic

Some English readers might not know, but in the ancient Iranian culture, Iranians have a massive picnic on the 13th day of the year. Today is the 13th of Farvardin, or the 13th day into Spring.

Tradition
Getting rid of the 13th day, was to get rid of all the ill omens that the number 13 might stand for. But like Valentine's Day (on 14th of Feb), the unmarried go and find to fine shoots of grass, and make a knot. So the whole of the Iranian country side will be knotted-up, while people prepare to wind down the Iranian (non religious) New Year celebrations. All the Haftseen especially the grass, that is grown before the New Year begins, is thrown in running water.

A scene from Teheran

Exiles in LA
I remember a true story, how in 1980, the Iranians in LA wanted to hire a park for this huge gathering. When the occasion was over, the police congratulated the organisers. They said that they have never seen as many as 30,000 people in one place, and there was no sign of drugs, druckeness, etc etc. But there was just one curious observation. So the Iranian organizers all shuffled, and put their hands on their sweaty heads, eager to hear something really bad. Then the chief of police asked, "but what's with the grass, it is all knotted-up?. The Iranians breathed out with huge relief. Nowadays the crowds are something of the order 100,000, and all over LA county.

Have fun, and again a happy and victorious Nowrouz for every day.

Or as we say in Iran sizdeh-bedaretoon bedar.
